THREE people were injured in a head-on smash on the Midland Highway last night, with one woman flown to Melbourne for treatment.

The woman, aged in her 40s, was trapped in her crumpled sedan after a collision with a truck at a Gheringhap intersection soon after 6pm.

Eight CFA units attended the crash, with emergency services having to cut her free from the wreckage.

Paramedics rushed the injured patient to Bannockburn oval, where she was placed into the air ambulance and flown up to The Alfred hospital.

She was in a serious but stable condition last night, having sustained chest injuries.

Two men, one aged in his 70s, were taken via ambulance to Geelong Hospital with minor chest and abdominal injuries.

The highway was closed for more than a hour as crews made the road safe
