An allegedly drunk truck driver was detained by members of the public after he was seen swerving across lanes of traffic and trying to reverse onto a motorway in Sydney's southwest.

The 49-year-old man driving a B-double was stopped by members of the public after he jack-knifed while attempting to U-turn at a service station near Prestons after 12.20pm on Sunday, police said.

Earlier he had allegedly been seen swerving across lanes of traffic on the M5 and M7 and exiting the M7 at Prestons before stopping and attempting to reverse back onto the motorway.

The 49-year-old Queensland man was arrested and returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.282.

He was charged with high-range drink driving and working more than the standard maximum time.

His licence was suspended and he's due to appear at Liverpool Local Court on April 24.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man has been charged with high-range drink driving after he was involved in a head-on crash at Edensor Park in Sydney's west on Sunday.

The man allegedly drove onto the wrong side of the road and collided with another car before he did a U-turn in an attempt to flee and then crashed into a police vehicle, police said.

He returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.220 and his licence was suspended.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy said 228 people had so far been charged with drink driving offences this Easter long weekend.

"We are past the point of being disappointed, we are now angry that drivers are not listening to our warnings," Mr Corboy said in a statement on Monday.

"Too many people are risking their own and other people's lives with their reckless and stupid decisions.
