Truckie pulls baby alive from fiery fatal crash wreckage

A truck driver has pulled a baby from a car involved in a fiery crash that claimed the lives of two people on the Bruce Highway in north Queensland.

It is the latest in a series of fatal accidents on Queensland roads that have occurred in just over a week.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said a truck and a car collided just south of Cardwell at 4:00pm on Tuesday, causing the truck to burst into flames.

The driver of the car and a second passenger died at the scene.

QAS senior operations supervisor Wayne Paxton said an off-duty critical care paramedic was the first on the scene.

“She assisted the truck driver; the truck driver removed a child from the car,” he said.

“Her actions are certainly appreciated by all other emergency services who arrived on the scene.”

The baby suffered a minor head injury and was flown to the Townsville Hospital in a stable condition.

The truck driver was also taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions as a result of the crash.

Since Monday last week, 18 people have been killed on Queensland roads.

On Sunday, three people died in an accident in Bundaberg.

Homicide detectives are also investigating the deaths of five people in a fiery crash at Kumbia, near Kingaroy, on May 27.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart confirmed last Friday detectives were investigating whether Ms Harris McLeod crashed the car deliberately.
