Truckies invited to air concerns at Port of Brisbane

THE Palaszczuk Government's popular truckie toolbox talk is heading to the Port of Brisbane tomorrow.

Truckies are invited to the port's inbound weigh site from 7am to 3pm, to find out the latest in the Palaszczuk Government's $23 billion roads program and chat with transport staff and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said it follows the completion of the new $2.7 million Nudgee rest stop opened near the port as part of the $1.1 billion Gateway Motorway North upgrade.

The new truck stop includes 25 parking bays suitable for a range of heavy vehicles including trucks and buses. It also has outdoor seating areas, shade, water, lighting and a pedestrian connection to the Nudgee Service Centre.

"Over the next 10 years, the volume of freight moving across Queensland will grow more than 20 per cent, and we want to make sure we're supporting our heavy vehicles drivers,” Mr Bailey said.

"The toolbox talks are a great way to find out more about the latest in heavy vehicles for Queensland, and follows new reforms we introduced to slash red tape for the industry.

Topics commonly discussed at truckie toolbox talks include regulations, accreditations, permits, notices, dangerous goods, mass limits, route planning, load restraints and fatigue management.

"Since the first talk in Gatton almost four years ago, the program has been a huge success with heavy vehicle drivers and the industry as a whole.”

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said it's important that compliance agencies, the NHVR and drivers meet and discuss issues that affect heavy vehicle safety and productivity.

"I welcome the Queensland Government's commitment to continuing to improve heavy vehicle infrastructure and engaging with the industry about the key issues,” Mr Petroccitto said.

Truckie toolbox talks are regularly held across the state at locations including Cairns, Rockhampton, Gladfield, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.
