Isuzu 4x4 fills the bill for Perth pool company

The Concrete Pool Company, owned by husband-and-wife team Helen and Ryan McGowan, produces up to 15 premium pools per year with the aid of an Isuzu NPS 75-155 4x4 truck.

The McGowans decided to dive into full-time pool building after renovating three concrete pools at a holiday park in northern Perth around four years ago.

“We’re a premium builder, so we want to concentrate on building premium pools; we only do a maximum of 15 pools a year,” said Helen McGowan.

The Concrete Pool Company work on varied projects – anywhere between Geraldton to the north and Margaret River south of Perth.

Ryan McGowan told Isuzu that he needed something that had the four-wheel-drive capabilities of a ute, but with the load carrying ability and strength of a truck.

To cover the distance and carry all the tools needed for building a pool, the McGowans invested in an Isuzu NPS 75-155 4x4.

“I don’t believe anybody else is doing a truck that size with four-wheel-drive capabilities and an automated manual transmission (AMT),” said Ryan McGowan.

“Especially in the summer here, when the ground is dry, the sand is so soft. Without a four-wheel-drive, I wouldn’t even get a metre off the kerb without getting stuck.”

Ryan McGowan said he also needs space for long lengths of steel, formwork and pipework as well as his tool. The truck is fitted with a 4.5m x 2.4m tray built by Perth Bodybuilders, custom-built toolboxes and a Palfinger PC 1500 Compact crane.

With a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 7,500kg, power of 114 kW at 2,600 rpm and torque of 419Nm at 1,600 rpm, Ryan McGowan said the difference in performance between empty and fully loaded is barely noticeable.

“It doesn’t feel sluggish, even when we pick up natural stone pavers coming in at around four tonnes,” he said.

The Isuzu NPS 75-155’s multimedia functions are reported to be beneficial to the business. The Bluetooth phone capability allows Ryan McGowan to safely make calls on the go with high quality sound.
